Researchers are investigating methods of altering tumor cell response to heat and radiation after finding that cancer cells are able to protect themselves from heat and radiation. The ability to deter effects from heat and radiation make cells less susceptible to radiation therapy and hyperthermia, thus reducing the chances of cure.

After finding that the mechanism that the cells have to resist heat is vulnerable to alteration, radiation oncology researchers have focused on methods to destroy the mechanism which protects cancer cells from damage by heat and radiation. This holds promise of much better cure rates in the future.
